How to play Annandale Friday

A Nassau game for one group of five or six on one card. The group splits into teams, and the teams decide which three Nassaus are played.

THE SHORT ANSWER

With six, the group makes three pairs and every pair plays the other two. With five, a pair plays each pair it can make from the other three. Either way there are three Nassaus, each a net better-ball match with a front, back and overall bet, and presses at 2 down.

The rules

Annandale Friday is for a group too big for a standard Nassau. Everyone plays his own ball on one card, and the group is split into teams of two, or a pair and a three with five golfers. Each match is a Nassau between two pairs, played as net better ball.

You post one score a hole, and it counts in every match you are in. A result in one Nassau has no effect on the others.

1
Make the teams
Three pairs with six. A pair and a three with five. The teams decide the matches.
2
Three Nassaus
Pairs play each other at net better ball: front nine, back nine and the eighteen.
3
Settle every bet
Each Nassau settles on its own, presses included. Your total is every bet you were in.

On each hole the better net ball on each side decides the hole. With 2nd ball breaks ties on, when the better balls are level the other two balls decide it. The group can also play Claremont scoring, which adds a low v. low and a high v. high match to each Nassau.

Teams make the matches

Set the teams on the first tee. The teams decide who plays whom, so nobody has to work out the pairings.

SIX GOLFERS · THREE PAIRS
1
Paul & Sam v Dave & Jim.
2
Paul & Sam v Tom & Mark.
3
Dave & Jim v Tom & Mark. Every golfer is in two Nassaus.
FIVE GOLFERS · A PAIR AND A THREE
1
Paul & Sam v Dave & Jim.
2
Paul & Sam v Dave & Tom.
3
Paul & Sam v Jim & Tom. The pair is in all three Nassaus. Dave, Jim and Tom are in two each.

With four golfers, play a standard Nassau as two against two. Annandale Friday is only for five or six.

Strokes

By default strokes come off the low man in the group. He plays off scratch, and everyone else gets the difference between his handicap and the low man’s, taken on the lowest stroke indexes.

Because strokes are set for the whole group, a golfer gets the same strokes in every Nassau he plays. The group can choose full net or gross instead, with an allowance.

Stakes and presses

The stake is per bet, and each Nassau has three. At $10, a golfer in two Nassaus can win or lose up to $60 before presses. With five, the pair is in all three Nassaus, so up to $90.

Auto press at 2 down
When a side goes 2 down in a bet, a press starts on the next hole and runs to the end of that nine. A new press starts each time a side goes 2 down again, in the bet or in a press.
Manual press
A setup option. A side that is 1 down or level can call a press, starting on the next hole.
What you can lose
There is no loss cap. Each Nassau settles on its own, so a golfer in two of them is exposed to two of them — a group that wants less at stake plays a lower bet rather than capping it.

Skins alongside

Skins isn’t part of the game, but most Annandale groups add it as a side game for all five or six. The usual setup:

Net par or better to win
A hole only pays a skin when the lowest net is par or better. Otherwise it carries.
Gross birdie steals
A gross birdie beats a net birdie, but not a net eagle.
Carry over
A halved hole, or one nobody wins, adds its skin to the next.

Scoring it without a spreadsheet

Three Nassaus with presses is a lot to keep on one card for six golfers. Halved scores it — one score per golfer per hole, strokes set for the group, every bet and press tracked, and who owes whom at the end.

Teams in, matches out
Pick the teams and the app sets up the three Nassaus. It won’t start until the teams fit five or six.
Every press, every match
After each hole you see every Nassau’s result, any press that starts and the skin.
One net number each
The leaderboard adds every bet you are in, so each golfer sees one total.

Six golfers, three Nassaus, one card.

Halved is free for the group, and it runs every Nassau, the presses, the skins and the settlement.

Questions people ask

How many Nassaus are there in Annandale Friday?

Three, whether the group is five or six. Each has a front, back and overall bet, so nine bets run before any presses.

How are the matches decided with five golfers?

Two golfers make a pair and the other three make a team of three. The pair plays a Nassau against each pair you can make from the three, so three Nassaus in total.

How do strokes work?

By default the low handicap in the group plays off scratch and everyone else gets the difference, taken on the lowest stroke indexes. The same strokes apply in every Nassau. The group can play net or gross instead, with an allowance.

When does a press start?

With auto press on, a new press starts each time a side goes 2 down, from the next hole. If manual presses are on, a side that is 1 down or level can also press from the next hole.

Is Skins part of Annandale Friday?

No. Skins is added as a side game for the whole group, usually played net, with net par or better to win and a gross birdie that beats a net birdie.
